Chapters 1-3
From the perspective of Atticus Finch

When Walter came over, I expected him to eat a lot, but not to drown his plate in syrup. I guess he hasn't really had a proper meal before. I'm glad he could come over.

After the first day of school for Jean and Jem, I rounded a corner to see them running towards me. I question them excitedly, wondering how it was. Jem is happy, but Jean, however, is saying yes, no, and other monosyllable awnswers I can't help but thinking “whats up”?

I have read to Jean since she was a small child, and although I worry a bit about what her teacher thinks, I care more about my childs education. I wonder what Ms Caroline is doing, telling us we can't teach our own children. I bet my version of reading is so much better that hers. When Jean came home, I was worried about her, as she said she was sick, and went outside. I'm sure it was that horrible Ms. Caroline. Not only does she say Jean is doing it all wrong, but then she calls her a liar! I am happy to read to Jean, but I made her promise that she wouldn't tell the her teacher. I don't know what she would say, but she can't get it into her head that she can deviate from the 'proven' method of the adults. Showing the class cards with words written on them won't work.

Anyway, I that is how I feel about today's events, believe it or not.
